During 2008, Jacqueline was appointed by CABE* Space to work as their special advisor to South Hams District Council and Kingsbridge Town Council to develop a play park in the town. (*Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment, now integrated with the Design Council.)
This work involved liaising with a Working Party and the local community to assess the need for play facilities and to develop options for a range of enhancements and improvements.
In her role as a CABE Space Advisor, Jacqueline gave advice to the community group on how to conduct their consultation around the project, and how to secure a contractor.
Anne Balkwill, Kingsbridge Town Councillor and Chairman of the Working Group said:
‘The Recreation Ground in Kingsbridge now feels like a very different place to a few years ago… This green space was badly in need of some new design ideas and we had no access to an overall plan. The community group involved with the Recreation Ground desperately needed a framework and professional advice to put the Town Council and South Hams District Council on the right track.
As the CABE Space Advisor, Jacqueline helped us to research what was needed, consult with local people and also prepare a brief for the site. On the basis of the brief, we engaged a firm to draw plans for our parks and open spaces. With these plans, community groups, namely Kingsbridge Playspaces Group, were able to apply for and gain funding to regenerate these spaces. But it all started with CABE Space which pulled together all the community ideas into a coherent plan. The park has recently won the ‘Green Flag’ award, the first park in the South Hams to do so’.
