The Plymouth Sports Facility Strategy underpinned a new strategic approach to facility development in the city by assessing provision, considering the role of existing facilities linked to key sports and gaps in provision, and making a series of recommendations to meet identified needs of key sports within the city.
Liz Slater, Leisure Partnership Manager at Plymouth City Council said:
‘The research and consultation undertaken by belap in the preparation of the Sports Facilities Strategy involved all clubs, schools, amenity groups, sports development officers and young people’s forums throughout the city, and all sports facilities were visited and assessed. The strategy was prepared following Sport England Guidance documents and provided an evidence base that has enabled the City Council to develop strong local plan policies, to secure developer contributions and to seek funding from a variety of other sources.
Together with the advent of the Plymouth Life Centre, the Sports Facilities Strategy has given a new impetus to sports planning across the city, ensuring that facilities are developed to address need, opportunities for participation are improved and the best use is made of existing facilities and resources.’ – Autumn 2012
